Some psychologists study the significance of color and its effect on different people from a variety of backgrounds. Colors are known for their ability to excite, soothe, irritate, or inspire people. Home designers have long known the importance of using color. Used appropriately, colors can help create desired moods in a room. Here is a quick guide to using colors.

Dark colors

Dark colors sometimes carry an unpleasant reputation of being associated with gloom. But dark colors, when used appropriately can help to achieve a significantly pleasant effect. Colors like black, brown, burgundy and eggplant can be calming because they are not noisy colors. They are, instead, deep and “quiet.” Dark colors are great to use for elegant or sophisticated designs, and can be nicely combined with lighter complementary colors.

Bold, rich colors

Lively greens, oranges, reds, blues – these colors are powerful. They attract attention, and can evoke strong responses. Too much of a bold color can overpower the senses, so it should be used carefully. Bold colors are wonderful as part of an accent design, or in combination with complementary colors.

Pastels and earth tones

Both pastel and earth tone colors have the capacity to enhance moods. They are known to help create a sense of deep relaxation and wellness. Light pastels can expand space. Earth tones can ground a space and make it inviting and embracing.

Whenever white is applied to a design, it immediately lifts the design so that everything appears brighter. It invites light, and in so doing, expands space. Because of its properties it is also associated with cleanliness and purity. It’s also a universal color – it complements everything.
